Nutrition

A nutritious diet can prevent and reduce periodontitis. Below we have collected some examples.

Immune system
Periodontitis is caused by bacteria, and starts as an infection. A healthy and strong immune system will help remedy this infection. A nutritious and varied diet, such as the omega-3 fatty acids from seafood is of great importance.

Calcium
Calcium is an important nutrient. Research has shown that men and women who consume an amount of calcium equal to half the daily recommended are twice as likely to have periodontitis. Calcium is used for building bones, and as periodontitis breaks down the bone, calcium can help keep the jawbone strong. Foods with calcium are dairy products, milk, yogurt, cheese, dark green vegetables, rice and beans.

Vitamin C
An important factor in soft tissues and gums. If you are in extreme vitamin C deficiency, the gums will swell and start to bleed. Good sources of vitamin C are dark fruits and vegetables, such as oranges, green and red peppers, broccoli, and strawberries.

Vitamin B
Is an important factor for a healthy immune system.

Water
Water is healthy for the whole organism. It keeps the mouth moist. Adequate amounts of water and saliva relieves caries and periodontitis, flushes food and bacteria away from the teeth, and reduces plaque formation.

Sugar
A high intake of sugar and inadequate oral hygiene can result in cavities. Although sugar does not have a direct effect on periodontitis, the increased amount of bacteria (plaque) will worsen your overall oral health incl. periodontitis.
