If you suspect that you may have a periodontal disease, or if you have been referred to us by your own dentist, you will start with a periodontal exam.
If it is your first visit with us, you will be asked to complete a new patient health history form when you arrive at the clinic. It is important you fill this adequately, especially regarding to diseases and medication.
The exam is performed by reviewing your medical and dental history, conducting a comprehensive clinical examination of your teeth and gums, and possibly take digital X-rays and suggest treatment options. In some cases, additional diagnostic tests may be performed.
The study itself
For every tooth, a lot of measurements will be taken. These measurements will tell us how deep your gum pockets are and whether your gums are normally. At the same time, we record whether you bleed from the gums and whether your teeth are loose.
Some think these measurements are uncomfortable, so if you feel you need a short break, or even a little bit of anesthetic, just say.
After these measurements and possibly X-rays, we will be able to tell you what it looks like and whether you have periodontitis or not.
